Fluoride - has been clinically proven to be effective in preventing dental caries. Fluoride can become incorporated into the hydroxyapatite at the tooth surface to form a new mineral, fluorapatite. Fluorapatite is less soluble at low pH than hydroxyapatite and hence the tooth becomes more resistant to demineralization. Low levels of fluoride found in saliva and plaque (fluoride in plaque fluid acts as a reservoir held at the tooth surface) accelerate remineralisation which leads to the replacement of lost calcium and phosphate to the tooth from the saliva by driving the thermodynamic equilibrium for crystal growth.

Potassium Nitrate - The most widely accepted theory to explain the mechanism of dentinal sensitivity is Brannstrom’s hydrodynamic theory of dentin sensitivity. This theory postulates that rapid shifts, in either direction, of the fluids within the dentinal tubules, following application of stimuli, result in activation of sensory nerves in the pulp/inner dentin region of the tooth.
